Don began his musical career in 5th grade playing alto saxophone in a small country school system. His school was so small, in fact, that he played the bari sax in the high school marching band beginning in his 6th grade year. I n high school Don was active in band, jazz band, choir, and swing choir. While attending Purdue University Don performed with Purdue's #2 and #3 jazz bands, playing bari sax. During his college senior year he picked up the guitar and began leading worship at his campus ministry.
In the early 80's Mark and Don joined forces with Doug to form a 7-piece rock band with a horn section named "Lotus." This group played music ranging from Duke Ellington to Stevie Wonder to the Kinks. When Rex married into the "Molter Clan" he, along with Mark and Don began performing a sax trio in their home church with self-arranged hymns. The group grew when Scott and Shane came into the picture.
Since forming The Vinyl Kings Don has retired his saxophone and devoted his time to the acoustic and electric guitars. He is active in his church's praise band and is proud to see each of his three children involved in some aspect of music. Don's secret fantasy is to one day play at the Indiana Beach Roof Garden. His biggest honor has been to sing and play with Mark at each of his niece and nephew’s wedding services.
Don has been influenced through the years by the talents of Maynard Ferguson, Larry Norman, James Taylor, Marshall Tucker, Earth, wind & Fire, and yes....even Lawrence Welk.
